Inspired by satirical drawings, such as the classic New Yorker cartoons, Amalia Ulman invented the friendly outlines of Bob the pigeon. The pigeon, that “rat with wings,” is the middle manager of urban life. Undervalued and ubiquitous, they have endured throughout history as reviled migrants from Roman antiquity to the contemporary city. Now collected in Ulman’s book A Job is a Job is a Job, the pigeons live mundane lives as the urban sky’s perpetual underdogs.
